Dogs and other Family Pets are Welcome Too!Ella after a long walk on the beach

We believe the family dog is just that, a member of the family and deserves a holiday too!  We have a dog - a Great Dane - and wherever we go we try to take her with us.   We believe that if you have a well-trained, well-behaved dog and want them to join in the family holiday, why should you compromise on quality when it comes to your accommodation?  The vast majority of 5 Star-standard self catering properties in the UK do not accept pets - but we do!

We also accept other domestic pets, including extremely well-behaved cats.  Please call to discuss before booking.

We have strict conditions relating to pets however, including them not being allowed on the furniture under any circumstances, but in our experience, most pet owners are very respectful and conscientious people.  They care about their pets and wouldn't let them come on holiday unless they were well-behaved, so they are therefore very welcome in our holiday homes!

A Dogs Day Out at the Beach ....

Northumbria is one of the few counties in the UK to have very little restriction on dogs accessing the beaches.  The belief is that our beaches are so vast that there is room for everyone.   Dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages love nothing better than a romp on a wide sandy beach, clambering up the dunes and leaping into the waves.  Warkworth is perfect for both beach and countryside walks and all of our cottages have fires (some wood-burners) for them to stretch out and snooze in front of after all that exertion!  Take a look at our page detailing just a few of the great beaches in the area.

Take them for a Pint ....

You'll also find that the majority of our local pubs welcome dogs and many have water bowls outside so they can have a "pint" too!

"Well are we going for that walk or not?"

On Their Best Behaviour ....

We are happy for you to have your pet accompany you on holiday, but it is under the strict understanding that you adhere to our booking conditions relating to the acceptance of pets to our properties.  Our properties are beautifully furnished at great expense and are presented in an immaculately clean condition for you, so it is important that you ensure that your pet is not allowed on any furniture, is never left in the property on its own, does not create any kind of nuisance to your neighbours and the gardens are kept clean and undamaged.  We recommend that you bring plenty of your pet's bedding and towels with you, feeding and water bowls and poop bags.  We charge a nominal £15 for each dog with a maximum of 2 per property.   We can provide bedding, bowls, towels and spare leads if required - just ask.

Please note: we are unfortunately unable to accept pets at 'Waterside'.

If you're not confident in your pet's manners, we can provide details of a local kennel or cattery which may be a better arrangement.   This way, you can board your pet away from the property whilst still being able to take them out with you during the day.  Ask for details if you think this will be more suitable for you.

Out and About with your Dog

Beaches

Dogs are allowed on all of Northumberland's beaches throughout the year. However, there are some restrictions at Low Newton-by-the-Sea as Little Terns nest at one of the bays along the coast (to the north of the main beach) from May to August. Please keep your dogs away from this part of the beach during the summer months. Dogs must be kept on leads at Newton Pool Nature Reserve, which is behind the beach, and are allowed on the boundary path and in the hide only.   Click on the following link to find out more about just a few of the great beaches in the area.

Historic Properties and Parks

Dogs on leads are allowed into the grounds at many English Heritage properties. They are also permitted to visit the grounds (except the Formal Garden) at Cragside and the grounds and Walled Garden at Wallington Hall (both National Trust) but only on leads. There is a 1.5 mile walk along the coast from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle, where dogs are allowed on leads. Please note that livestock is often present along the route so dogs should not be allowed to roam free.

Health and Safety with your Dog

When holidaying with your dog in Northumberland please remember to observe the country code and keep your dog on a lead when near livestock. This is particularly important during the lambing season.

Care should be taken near estuaries as there are strong currents and some rivers have hidden, steeply shelving banks at this point in their course.

Please be aware that adders can be found in the national park. They may be seen on warm days, particularly during the spring, when they are coming out of hibernation. If your dog is bitten by an adder contact one of the
vets surgeries listed here.

If you are coming to Northumberland on holiday, we recommend you print out our list of vets surgeries and keep it in your car, so you have the contact details of the nearest vet if you need it when you are out and about.
