Places to Eat - Pubs, Restaurants and Cafes
There is an excellent range of places to eat in the area. Our visitor's books are ideal places to read recommendations from previous guests. Here is a selection of establishments in and within easy walking or driving distance of Warkworth. Please note that we have deliberately omitted opening times, as they can vary according to the season, so we have provided telephone numbers for you to check the establishment will be open when you wish to visit.
In Warkworth Village - all within easy walking distance of all our cottages:
The Jackdaw. Castle Street, Warkworth. Tel: 01665 711 488
Very good quality food served in an elegant, yet homely restaurant. The owners take great pride in the quality and presentation of food and are really friendly without being intrusive. We can certainly recommend The Jackdaw, especially for a special Sunday lunch or a lovely evening meal. They welcome children but you might find it harder with smaller children, as it has a slightly formal feel to it, which is nice for adults but kids may get itchy feet! Ring to check opening times and you usually need to book.
Topsy Turvey's. Dial Place, Warkworth. Tel: 711 338
A very popular cafe which also opens on an evening. Good quality home-cooked food with an extensive menu. Kids like it here not only because they have a reasonable kids menu but because Margaret, the owner, dresses the cafe up brilliantly at Easter, Valentines Day, Halloween and Christmas and it becomes a wonderful grotto of all things seasonal! Having said that, it's very popular with all ages and particularly the locals (which is always a good sign!). You'll need to book for evening meals and Sunday lunches during busy times of the year.
The Warkworth House Hotel, "No.16 Restaurant - Le Bistro", Bridge Street, Warkworth. Tel: 01665 711 276
This is a 3 star hotel with a welcoming bar which is lovely for morning coffees and afternoon teas, as well as pub lunches. They serve gorgeous hot chocolate and Belgian waffles! The restaurant has recently been totally refurbished and is now quite contemporary with gallery style white walls hung with local art, which you can buy. The menu has a French flavour to it. It's had glowing recommendations from many of our guests, although many say the service can be a little slow - but if you're on holiday, what's the rush?
The Sun Hotel, Castle Terrace, Warkworth. Tel: 01665 711 259
Traditional hotel serving meals in the bar and restaurant. The bar is popular with locals and has a good atmosphere. Dogs are not usual welcome.
New Barns Farm
Local farm located on the outskirts of the village, signposted from the south side of the castle, offering a farm shop which sells excellent produce including nationally renowned meat and pies, a cafe with home-baked cakes and light meals and a restaurant. They are quite popular for their Sunday lunches. You'd need to book at weekends to be sure of a table. Tel: 01665-710035
The Mason's Arms, Dial Place, Warkworth
Situated right in the heart of Warkworth Village, The Mason's Arms is a traditional pub serving good ales and good, hearty food. Very popular with locals and visitors alike. Dogs very welcome. Tel: 01665-711398
The Hermitage Inn, Castle Street, Warkworth
Also situated in the heart of Warkworth, opposite The Mason's Arms, the Hermitage is another traditional Northumbrian pub, serving good quality pub grub - particularly on a Sunday when their Carvery menu is particularly popular and you should book to ensure a table. There is a lively atmosphere, Sky Sports and live music some nights. Dogs welcome. Tel: 01665-711258.
Morwick Ice Cream Parlour
On the road to Acklington from Warkworth about 2 miles out. Cafe is very small with limited food however the ice cream is quite possible the best you will ever taste - anywhere in the world! Housed in part of the milking shed, it's lovely to see their award winning Freisian cows milling around. There's a good little adventure playground for the kids too. Tel: 01665 711210
The Courtyard Cafe
4 Bridge Street, Warkworth. Tel: 01665 711444. Nice little cafe with pretty outdoor seating area in a sunny courtyard with a central fountain. Also has an interesting little gift shop.
Further afield, but still within easy driving distance of Warkworth:
The Cook and Barker, Newton-on-the-Moor. Tel: 01665 575 234
One of our favourite eating places! A few miles out of Warkworth just off the A1. Very well recommended by a great many of our guests for the lovely, traditional, Northumbrian pub atmosphere, but with the added advantage of excellent quality cuisine. You need to book on an evening and weekends if you want to eat in the restaurant. Kids may not appreciate the adult style of the food on offer and they don't particularly cater for them, but they're welcome nonetheless (we take ours!).
The treehouse in Alnwick Castle Gardens is the largest of its kind in Europe and is a sight worth seeing! There is an interesting cafe/restaurant housed in the treehouse serving good quality food (lovely homebaked cakes!). The atmosphere on dark evenings is magical, so definitely worth a visit if you can fit it in. On Thursday evenings there is live jazz and on Friday evenings live music is performed to accompany the delicious food being served. Tel: 01665-511852 for more details or to reserve a table. See our 'Events in 2008' page for up and coming performances at the Treehouse and Gardens. There is only one pub in the little village of Lesbury, 4 miles north of Warkworth on the road to Alnwick and it is well worth a visit. A traditional pub with lots of attention to detail and the most wonderful food - but expect large portions! Children aren't allowed in the bar, but are more than welcome in the restaurant. Book a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Tel: 01665-830865.Alnwick Gardens Treehouse

The visitors books in each of our properties are full of recommendations for eating out - for which we thank all our previous guests who have taken the time and trouble to write about where they've enjoyed eating out (and not where the case may be!). Please do write your own recommendations when you visit us next.
