A Secret Gem
Brinkburn Priory is Northumberland’s secret gem and this gorgeous cottage sits in the grounds of this remarkable place. The delightful Grade II listed stables and coach house of the Priory were imaginatively converted into a family home and guest cottage in 2009. The cottage was originally the Coachman's quarters. Situated in a glorious and secluded wooded valley near Rothbury, on the banks of the River Coquet, Priory Cottage offers peace and tranquility in a beautiful setting. Priory Cottage has been awarded 4 Stars by VisitEngland, as well as a prestigious GOLD Award for excellence.

The Priory is home to the Brinkburn Music festival, frequent recitals and concerts on many weekends throughout the summer. From October to April the Priory is closed to visitors, giving guests of the cottage exclusive access to the historic grounds.
If you are looking to recharge your batteries, wonder at the beauty of the River Coquet and the Coquet Valley, chill out in the cosy lounge, walk in 35 acres of private woodland or explore the Cheviots or the culture and heritage of the North East, walk along huge sandy beaches to castles, sample the superb food and local hospitality, you’ve certainly come to the right place. Brinkburn is the perfect base to experience all that Northumberland offers.
PLEASE NOTE: Priory Cottage may be booked in conjunction with The Stables for accommodation suitable for up to 8 adults and 3 children (plus infants). One well behaved dog welcome by arrangement.
Ground Floor
Lounge
The spacious lounge has a dining table and chairs and large comfy sofa. The sofa can be converted into a bed, which would allow 2 adults that needed separate beds to stay at the cottage, or it could accommodate an older child - allowing a small family to stay (the style of the stairs make it unsuitable for a toddler). There is a flat screen digital TV, DVD player and a library of DVD's and books. Free Wi-Fi access is available upon request. The whole of the ground floor is heated by underfloor heating, enhanced by an efficient woodburning stove for the cooler months, for which free logs and access to the woodstore is provided.
Kitchen
Leading from the lounge is a contemporary style kitchen with electric oven and ceramic hob, larder fridge with icebox, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, espresso coffee machine, toaster and kettle. A highchair is available for an infant upon request.
Bathroom
A spacious 'wet room' shower room, comprising a large walk-in shower with ceiling-rose shower head, toilet and wash hand basin is also downstairs. Complimentary toiletries and towels are provided.
First Floor
Bedroom
Upstairs is the former hayloft which makes a delightfully quirky loft bedroom, with a kingsize bed and chest of drawers. There is a raised platform perfect for storage of luggage. A wardrobe with hanging space is located in a walk-in cupboard next to the bathroom. A cot can be provided upon request for an infant not yet walking (the stairs of the cottage are not suitable for a toddler).
Parking
There is private parking just yards from the cottage.
Gardens/Patio
A seat provided to the immediate front of the cottage provides a sunny spot to enjoy all day long. There is also a patio garden area to the side of the cottage, adjacent to the river, which is furnished and has a BBQ.
Pets Welcome
One clean and well-trained pet is very welcome by arrangement for a small charge of £20 under our strict house rules for pets. See our Booking Conditions for more information. A dog bed may be hired for £10 per holiday. Water bowls, a towel and treats are complimentary. Please note that although there are 35 acres of wonderful woodland and countryside surrounding Priory Cottage in which to walk and explore with your dog, the garden and patio area adjacent to the cottage is not enclosed and when out walking, you must keep your dog on a lead in the vicinity of livestock.
Music at Brinkburn Priory
A series of events is held at Brinkburn Priory every summer and they make for a wonderful afternoon or evening in the most tranquil part of Northumberland. Bring a picnic and a bottle of wine and enjoy fabulous music in the summer sunshine and balmy evenings. English Heritage members get in free and when you've paid for entrance into the Priory itself your ticket automatically gives you entrance to the concerts. Click here for information on this year's Brinkburn Music Festival, which is being held 8th-10th July 2011.
Press Cuttings
Priory Cottage was featured in the Daily Telegraph's Travel Supplement recently, in a feature entitled "The Best Walks in Britain". Focussing on the Coquet Valley, Priory Cottage and The Stables which adjoins the cottage were recommended as the best places to stay when exploring the Coquet Valley. We couldn't agree more! Here's a link to the full article in The Daily Telegraph.
PLEASE NOTE
Just a few little things to ensure you are aware of before booking;- A baby is welcome, although the stairs are unsuitable for an infant of walking age, so we cannot accept infants at walking age or above. A cot and a highchair are available upon request and a babysitting service is offered by arrangement for an additional hourly charge. The sofabed in the lounge may be utilised as a bed for an older child if required.
- Although in a lovely quite spot, please do not expect total privacy and seclusion all the time at Priory Cottage, as it is adjoining another property 'The Stables', so you will have a close neighbour if it's occupied. Fishermen also have access on the River Coquet, which is immediately adjacent to the cottage. Priory Cottage is situated on a working estate, so there are people tending sheep or working in the woods on a regular basis.
- The Priory is managed by English Heritage and is open to the general public from 1st April to 31st October, from Thursday to Monday only. Visitors arrive from 11am and the last are admitted at 4pm. Our guests have unrestricted access to the grounds of the Priory when it is closed, but an admission is payable to view inside the buildings.
- The owners will also be around sometimes, tending the gardens and have a very friendly dog called 'Red' who regularly walks in the wood, so if you have a dog which is particularly sensitive to others, please be aware of this.
- Please note that the grounds in the vicinity of the cottage are uneven in places and not suitable for anyone with reduced mobility.
Quality Grading
Priory Cottage has been assessed by VisitEngland and awarded a grading of 4 Stars and also awarded a prestigious GOLD Award for excellence. In addition to this, further awards have been granted for the quality of our welcome and facilities provided to walkers, cyclists and pets.
