A Luxury Retreat in a Stunning Setting
A luxurious 5 Star, GOLD Award-winning holiday retreat with the 'Wow' factor, perfectly situated within the idylic grounds of Brinkburn Priory in the beautiful Coquet Valley.
'The Stables' used to house the horses that served the residents of the adjacent Brinkburn Priory from the early 12th century when Augustine canons inhabited the site. Of course you would never know that today! It has now been superbly converted to a spacious and luxurious holiday retreat which comfortably sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. 2 additional children may be accommodated if required - please read the information below regarding the bedrooms.
PLEASE NOTE: The Stables can also be booked in conjunction with Priory Cottage, which adjoins it and sleeps 2 people, thereby providing fabulous and private accommodation for a maximum family group of up to 10 (max. 8 adults plus 2 children). An additional folding single bed for an extra child and 2 cots are also available upon request. Please see section further down 'Booking as a Large Group' for detailed information, as there are limitations.
Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome under our strict house rules for dogs.
This is a very special holiday home nestled in a bend of the River Coquet in the idyllic Coquet Valley near Rothbury. Set within 35 acres of private woodland and countryside and with fishing rights along the bountiful River Coquet - which flows immediately alongside The Stables - this fabulous house provides the perfect getaway for a family, two families or a group of friends. Immaculately furnished and imaginatively styled with great attention to detail, the owners of The Stables have carefully managed to preserve the period features of this impressive building whilst renovating it to 21st century standards. With spacious rooms, luxury bathrooms and an impressive contemporary open plan kitchen and living area, it lends itself perfectly to family gatherings.
With exposed Northumbrian stone walls, solid wood floors, character windows and original stone staircases, the addition of underfloor heating and two log burning stoves creates a wonderfully cosy atmosphere in a very spacious house.
There are so many great places to visit in the area, from the magnificent Cragside Estate, Rothbury, Morpeth, Hexham and Alnwick, to the beautiful Northumberland Heritage Coastline, with Bamburgh, Craster, Holy Island, Warkworth and Seahouses and for walking there's the Simonside Hills, The Cheviots, Hadrian's Wall and more.
Ground Floor
Lounge
The main entrance leads into a spacious yet incredibly cosy lounge, with comfortable sofas and a magnificent wood burning stove (wood provided). Large screen TV with DVD player and digital channels. Solid wood floor with rugs.
Dining Room
Positioned between the lounge and the kitchen is a spacious, bright and airy dining room with a table seating up to 10 overlooking the pretty patio area and woodland beyond. Exposed stone walls and solid oak floors with underfloor heating.
Large open plan kitchen/family area
Open plan from the dining room is a magnificent kitchen/family room with a high beamed ceiling with windows and full height windows filling virtually the whole of one entire wall. A glazed door leads directly onto a large patio.
The kitchen is stylish and contemporary, comprehensively equipped with all the usual appliances; electric oven and ceramic hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher, Nespresso Essenza coffee machine and some not so usual, such as steaming hot water on tap. There is an efficient wood burning stove at one end of this large room, complimenting the underfloor heating, and comfortable cream leather sofas for informal gathering. There is a library of books for all ages and tastes.
Laundry/Boot Room and Cloakroom
A useful room leading off the kitchen containing a washing machine, tumble dryer and Belfast sink. It has a cloakroom leading off it containing a toilet and wash hand basin. This room has an outside door so is useful for returning to the house with mucky boots after walking.
First Floor
Master Bedroom with En Suite Bathroom
A fabulous room with feature windows on 2 sides providing a beautiful unrestricted view of the River Coquet and the countryside beyond. Luxury super king-size bed. Large en-suite bathroom with freestanding bath, double size walk-in shower, wash hand basin and WC. There is an alcove to this room which is perfect for a cot, if required.
Ante-room to the Master Bedroom
Adjacent to the master bedroom is a small additional room housing a cot-bed (child only, maximum age permitted is 7yrs). This room also contains a wash basin.
Bedroom 2 - Double Bedroom
Spacious room with a kingsize bed and south-facing window overlooking the garden with Brinkburn Priory beyond.
Bedroom 3 - Twin Beds/Super kingsize Double
Spacious room with twin single beds and south-facing window overlooking the garden and Priory. These beds can be converted to a luxury super king size double bed upon request for an extra £10.
Bedroom 4 - Single - Available by Arrangement Only
A quirky and compact bedroom, this room is accessed via a separate staircase from the kitchen/family room. PLEASE NOTE: This room is ONLY available by arrangement. Please contact us to enquire. It is separate from the other bedrooms and is quite compact, so is only suitable for an adult or independent child. It has a single bed with integral drawers for storage. It is designed to be used when a large party occupies both The Stables and Priory Cottage, please contact us to discuss if you are interested in using it.
Additional Child's Bed
An additional folding single bed can be accommodated in any of the double sized rooms to accommodate an extra child of 12 yrs or under.
Family Bathroom
A spacious room with a bath, separate shower cubicle, wash hand basin and separate toilet.
Outside - Gardens and Parking
Parking for up to 3 cars adjacent to the house with extra parking nearby.
There is a large and sunny, south-facing patio and lawned garden in front of the house with outside furniture and a barbecue (photo available soon). There are 35 acres of woodland and countryside surrounding Brinkburn to which guests of The Stables and Priory Cottage have unrestricted access to for walking (although dogs must be kept on leads near livestock). The beautiful River Coquet Surrounds Brinkburn on 3 sides and fishing is permissible by our guests by arrangement.

Booking as a Large Group
The Stables is just perfect for accommodating a large family group, 2 or 3 families or several couples, thereby providing the perfect destination for a family get-together, intimate wedding or any other special celebration. By utilising the adjoining 'Priory Cottage' in addition to the 4th small single bedroom in The Stables and an extra folding bed for a child, a maximum of 8 adults, 3 children and 3 infants can be accommodated.
There is also a large function room, 'The White Room', available within The Stables which is available to hire by special arrangement. We will soon add more detailed information on the configuration of the accommodation when booked for a large group, as well as details of on-site fine dining/buffet facilities and the function room. Weddings and Celebrations at The Stables
The Stables provides a fabulous setting for an intimate wedding, family celebration or get-together of friends. By utlising The White Room, a beautiful function room incorporated into The Stables, catering, professional photography, flowers, etc. can be arranged. There are large patios and a large lawn, which provide a wonderful entertaining space. PLEASE NOTE
Just a few little things to ensure you are aware of before booking;- The 4th single bedroom is quirky, quite compact and very separate from the other bedrooms in that is is accessed via a completely separate staircase. It is therefore only really suitable for an independent/teenage child. An adult may use this room, but on the understanding that it is compact with only a single bed.
- The owners have an office on site which they use from time to time. It is incorporated into The Stables building, so you will occasionally hear them if it's particularly quiet. They are however on hand for any help and advice you may require with regard to walks and drives in the area, places to visit and guidance on fishing on the adjacent Coquet River, recommendations for places to dine, etc.
- Although in a lovely quite spot, please do not expect total privacy and seclusion all the time at The Stables, as there is another cottage adjoining it (Priory Cottage), so you will have a close neighbour if it's occupied. Fishermen also have access on the River Coquet, which is immediately adjacent to the house. The Stables is situated on a working estate, so there are people tending sheep or working in the woods on a regular basis.
- The Priory is managed by English Heritage and is open to the general public from 1st April to 31st October, from Thursday to Monday only. Visitors arrive from 11am and the last are admitted at 4pm. Our guests have unrestricted access to the grounds of the Priory when it is closed, but an admission is payable to view inside the buildings.
- The owners will also be around sometimes,tending the gardens and have a very friendly dog called 'Red' who regularly walks in the wood, so if you have a dog which is particularly sensitive to others, please be aware of this.

The Stables has been assessed by VisitEngland and awarded 5 Stars in addition to a prestigious GOLD Award for excellence. It has also been awarded additional recognition for the quality of welcome and facilities provided to cyclists, walkers and pets.
