A beautiful stone cottage at the heart of the market town of Alnwick, this special hideaway comes with a few luxurious touches. Sleeping four adults plus a child, the three-bedroom abode, which has a sauna, is situated within reach of shops and restaurants and just 350 metres from the charming marketplace, where you can browse the colourful stalls. Stroll 0.5 miles from your base to visit the famous castle or explore the splendid Alnwick Garden, with its impressive fountains and bamboo labyrinth. Bring your four-legged friend and head out of town to discover a myriad of dog walks, including the Northumberland Coast Path, which runs for over 60 miles between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Cresswell. Pack a picnic and drive 15.5 miles to the fringes of the dramatic Northumberland National Park. Enjoy days on the beach at Alnmouth, 5 miles away, or Warkworth, 8 miles away, both with scenic sandy stretches.

Open the front door and step inside to find yourselves in an airy kitchen/diner. With a natural wood floor, light work surfaces and cabinets, and a farmhouse-style table, this has an appealing and immediately welcoming country style. Prepare home-cooked meals for your nearest and dearest in here, then gather round the table to share your feasts over lively chat. Stairs from this room lead to the upper level of the cottage. The lounge is also on the ground floor. This beautiful space, which also has a wooden floor, features a lovely revealed stone fireplace that houses a wood burner. Stoke this up during the colder months and recline on the soft seating in front of the Smart TV. At the end of each fantastic day away in Alnwick, make your way up the stairs to your sumptuous bedrooms, with their luxury bed linens and towels. One of these has a super-king-size bed, with zip-and-link beds that can also be arranged as singles if discussed in advance. There is also a king-size bedroom and a single, all with storage for your clothes and belongings. The enchanting family bathroom is also here, with its freestanding copper bath for wallowing in hot bubble baths. This gorgeous room also has exposed stonework.

Sit out at the bistro table in the south-facing courtyard with coffee on fine mornings or a sundowner on warm evenings. Enjoy the sauna, which is also outside and has a shower and WC, for an extra charge at booking. There is free parking on a nearby street, subject to availability.

We had a good stay at Orchard Cottage. We are familiar with Alnwick having stayed in a variety of other properties in the town over the last 10-15y. We booked late this time and it was a sensible price for the location and the summer, but there was not that much else available TBH. We were mum and dad and 2x teenagers. The internet was fine for whaRead moret we needed and the large TV and soundbar was great for evenings. The kitchen floor and table was spacious and had good equipment, we cooked a few nights to save on costs. The second downstairs toilet was a bit peculiar being through a small courtyard and it shared a wooden building with a sauna (which we didn't use). The courtyard wasn't much use since we had relatively cool weather. There was only one toilet upstairs so for a family of four this was the compromise. The beds were all comfy and the bathroom was fine upstairs. the main bedroom was very spacious. I found the fact that the front door opened almost directly onto the road a bit of a negative. And once or twice an hour, during daylight hours, a bus or two came past rattling the house. Since it was harvest time, this was accompanied by tractors thundering past occasionally. It didn't go on through the night but I did rather wish it was a slightly quieter location or on one of the side streets and the courtyard was a bit more inviting. If you are out and about all day i doubt this would be any concern for you. Clearly you can walk into Alnwick in about 2-3 minutes and get access to all sorts of nice restaurants and a morrisons so that convenience was a trade off. Hide

One of the best self catering places we have stayed in. Ideally placed for exploring the area and from booking to leaving the customer service was excellent. We would definitely recommend Pickwick House and would book again if we return to Northumberland.
