An exquisite, single-storey Northumberland retreat for two, this enticing hideaway makes the perfect rural retreat. Sleeping two guests, the one-bedroom, dog-friendly barn nestles in scenic surroundings, 2 miles from Corbridge and 4 miles from Hexham. Head into Corbridge to meander through the independent shops and boutiques and pause in charming tea rooms. Visit the town’s museum with its many Roman artefacts and explore Corbridge Roman Town, where you can still walk along the former main street. Head into Hexham to discover attractive Sele Park and visit the Old Gaol. Pull on your walking boots and follow a section of nearby Hadrian’s Wall Path or venture further afield to magnificent walking routes. The North Pennines begins 6 miles away, while the Northumberland National Park is 7 miles away. Plan a trip to Newcastle, 19.5 miles away, to experience the bright lights of the city and visit its museums and historic sites.

Take four stone steps up to enter this gorgeous barn conversion. Find yourselves in the lobby/laundry room, where you can dry damp paws and slide off walking boots or wellies. Follow two more steps down into the welcoming lounge/kitchen/diner, with its beamed and vaulted ceiling and friendly appeal. Stoke up the fire in the wood burner during the colder months, then settle on the soft seating to watch a DVD or the Smart TV. Choose a book from the shelves or set up a board game. When you are ready to rustle up a romantic meal for two, head over to the stylish kitchen, which has stainless steel appliances and granite work surfaces. Here, you will find everything you need to ensure meal prep is smooth. Pull a bottle of wine from the fridge and dine together at the breakfast bar. As night falls on each day away, head into your sumptuous super-king-size bedroom, which overlooks the delightful courtyard. With ample storage and luxury linen, this has been finished with your comfort in mind. For an alternative sleeping arrangement, you can also request in advance that the beds be set up as singles. The chic, modern en-suite bathroom features both a bath and a shower.

Savour the sunshine out in your private, south-facing courtyard. Enjoy a cup of tea out here on one of the benches as you admire the colourful plants. There is private parking for one car at the barn. Extra space can be made available if requested.

Our hosts were very friendly and helpful and provided an excellent welcome pack, along with plenty of maps for walks in the surrounding area. The quality of the kitchen was very good and the bed was superb. However, the Barn is very dark and you had to have the lights on at all times. There is also no view as you look on to the owners property.

We had a lovely late autumn break, the weather was kind and we made the most of it, exploring the Roman sites and walking miles and miles! Having such a lovely cottage to come back to made the days even more special as we were always looking forward to the evenings in front of a roaring fire with a glass of wine.
