Alfred’s Apartment in Alnwick
A Gorgeous, Boutique Apartment in Medieval Alnwick
We are delighted to have Alfred’s Apartment as part of our unique, luxury collection of gorgeous holiday homes across Northumberland.
Located in the ‘hub’ of the county, Alfred’s Apartment is located in the impressive Malthouse in the very centre of the historic town of Alnwick. Formerly a brewery, this interesting old building has been transformed into a selection of luxurious 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, providing modern living in a medieval town.
Alfred’s Apartment is west-facing and sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms. One dog is very welcome and there’s a small private balcony. Everything in the town is at your fingertips, so a car is not necessary when you stay in Alnwick, especially if you’re staying for a shorter break.
Alfred’s Apartment sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms; the master room has a king size bed and the second bedroom has twin single beds that can be converted into a super-king-size bed upon request.
There’s one bathroom and the lounge, dining area and kitchen are open plan, making this apartment perfect for couples, friends holidaying together and small families.
The balcony is west facing and looks out over the gardens of the old house below. The apartment is full of the usual mod-cons and has free Wi-Fi throughout. One small-medium size dog is very welcome here for a small charge of £20.
The entrance into the apartment building is through the main glass doors, leading into a huge glass atrium spanning 3 floors. You can choose the stairs or the lift; the apartment is on the second floor.
Entrance into the apartment is bright and airy, as the majority of the Maltings building is built of glass at the front. The apartment is all on one level.
Open Plan Living Space – Kitchen/Dining Area
The bright, open-plan living space is complimented by west-facing floor to ceiling windows. The kitchen is very well equipped and contains all the usual appliances and accessories that you’d expect in a luxury apartment, such as an under-bench fridge and freezer, electric oven and ceramic hob, kettle, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer and filter coffee machine. The dining table seats four.
The lounge has a 3-seater sofa and an armchair. There’s a Smart TV and Bluetooth speaker, games for a range of ages and a small selection of books. The floor to ceiling windows let in lots of natural sunlight which is very pleasant in the afternoons and evenings. You can access the balcony from the lounge or the master bedroom.
Accessed from the lounge and the master bedroom is the west-facing balcony. This pretty space overlooks the gardens to the old house below, but as the balcony is raised higher than the house, you’re not overlooked. The balcony is furnished with a small table and seating.
The largest bedroom faces out to the balcony and has a king-size bed (5ft wide), super-comfy 3000 pocket-sprung mattress and lots of storage space. There’s a wall-mounted Smart TV. The bedding is all non-feather, with luxury bedlinen and towels and a hair dryer is also provided. You can access the balcony from this bedroom to enjoy a morning coffee.
Twin/Super king Bedroom
The twin bedroom is spacious, with twin single beds (3ft wide) which can convert into a super-king-size bed (6ft wide) upon request. Duvets and pillows are non-feather-filled. The bedlinen is luxurious cotton. Towels and a hair dryer are provided.
The bright and fully-tiled bathroom has a rainfall shower over the bath, a wash basin, sink and heated towel rail. Complimentary toiletries by The White Company are provided, along with plenty of towels.
There is one parking space outside the apartment building for one car. Two small hatchbacks could fit in this space back-to-back but otherwise an additional car would need to be parked either on a nearby street or local car park. There are plenty of parking spaces in Alnwick town using a ‘disc’ system, which is free of charge.

Map & Local Area
Alfred’s Apartment is right in the very heart of the medieval town of Alnwick and incredibly well situated for exploring the town, eating out and going for walks too, all without having to get in the car. You can reach Alnwick Gardens and Castle on foot, as well as the famous Treehouse. The nearest entrance to Alnwick Castle is just 5 minutes walk away on Bailiffgate, but for the Treehouse it will take around 15-20 minutes on foot, but it’s an easy walk.
You can also discover the famous Barter Books in the centre of the town, which is no more than 10 minutes walk away from Alfred’s Apartment. This is a ‘must-do’, especially in the cooler months, when you can relax by the fire with a cuppa and a good book! There are lots of little boutique shops, independent cafes and restaurants, as well as some great pubs around the town too, all just a short stroll away from the apartment. Twice a week, the market place hosts a farmer’s market.
The coast is really easy to reach from Alnwick too, both north and south. Southbound you will come to Alnmouth, Warkworth and Amble with quirky pubs, lovely cafes and interesting little independent shops. They all have lovely beaches too, and Amble has a very interesting working harbour, with the fabulous views.
To the north you have Craster with their nationally recognised Swallowfish kipper Smokehouse; Embleton with its stunning beach; Beadnell – a watersports haven; Seahouses harbour with the famous Billy Shiels Farne Islands boat tours, and Bamburgh with its magnificent castle.
Alfred’s Apartment is a fabulous holiday property in such a great location, with walks, great places to eat, the coast, shops and historical sites all at your fingertips.

Tips from a local
Take a stroll from the apartment, through the town and over the stunning pastures surrounding Alnwick.
To complete the full loop, the walk takes roughly 2 hours, but there are a few different points where you can turn off the track and head back into the town if you’d prefer a shorter stroll. You’ll be stunned by the gorgeous views of Alnwick Castle (as seen on Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Transformers), and the River Aln trickling through the fields hosts a lovely setting to stop for a break and a picnic.
Tips from a local
Barter Books in Alnwick; the old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore, is just about 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment. Every book you can possibly imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink. As the name suggests, you can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs and snoozing welcome too!
Tips from a local
Head to the coast and enjoy a day at Alnmouth, just 10 minutes’ drive from the apartment.
This gorgeous, historic village is full of character, with beautiful buildings and of course a breath-taking view over the dunes, sandy beach and out to sea from the bottom of the main street.
There are some lovely, friendly spots for a bite to eat (The Red Lion Pub and Restaurant, The Hope and Anchor Bar and Restaurant, and The Village Tea Rooms Cafe to name a few favourites!) and in the summer you can purchase some fab local produce from Scott’s of Alnmouth deli and dine alfresco on the shore.
