We are delighted to welcome Castle Retreat in Alnwick to our collection of luxury holiday homes and boltholes. This romantic, historic apartment overlooks the Barbican of Alnwick Castle with views out of all the front windows to the castle turrets and castle grounds beyond.
Sleeping just two, this idyllic retreat is right in the centre of Alnwick which is perfect to explore the town, the castle and the rest of Northumberland. Everything is quite literally on your doorstep, but as you are not on the main street of the town and the apartment building is so old, it’s peaceful and quiet too.
For any budding historians or avid Harry Potter fans, Castle Retreat couldn’t be in a better location, right opposite the Barbican to Alnwick Castle. You can even see the famous statues featured in the first Harry Potter film when learning to play Quidditch from the windows!
This romantic retreat sleeps just two guests in one bedroom, yet is still spacious and luxurious. Occupying this whole of the top floor of this Grade II listed townhouse, Castle Retreat is very spacious just for two with a large bedroom and lounge/diner. The whole apartment has been completely refurbished to a very high standard whilst still retaining some of the original features of the building. Full central heating is provided.
Castle Retreat welcomes one small dog (no bigger than a Jack-Russell size) and also has a travel cot and highchair for use with an infant, as well as a stair gate. The views from the apartment to the castle are fantastic, looking out to the Alnwick Castle Barbican, the turrets and the famous statues features in the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone film when the Quiddich lesson is taking place.
A £50 refundable security deposit is applicable for every booking with a dog.
The entrance to the apartment is initially through the front door of the building, up 4 steep stone steps from the street. The front door to Castle Retreat is up two further internal flights of 4-6 steps each. The front door leads you to a full flight of wide stairs leading you to the landing/hallway of the apartment.
The large lounge and dining room has an old window looking out to the castle Barbican. The window has as inbuilt window seat as the walls are so thick! The lounge has a deep, comfortable sofa and additional armchair, and original wooden beams to the ceiling.
The dining table seats two. There is a Smart TV with access to Netflix etc. (from your own account) and a Blu-Ray player, as well as a selection of books and board games.
The fully-refurbished and modern kitchen has solid work surfaces, under bench and plinth lighting. Electric oven, induction hob, fridge with freezer box, washer/dryer, dishwasher, Tassimo coffee maker (with an initial supply of pods) , microwave and toaster and digital radio with Bluetooth dock.

We were the first guests at Castle retreat. – first impressions ‘wow’. Fantastic location, tastefully decorated, immaculate, very well equipped. The welcome basket was fabulous. The guest information file was excellent. The owners Lynn & Peter have thought of everything, little touches like the guest toiletries and torches in the drawers and information for local attractions. We came to explore Northumberland and we certainly have done from Hadrian’s wall to Berwick. Beaches, castles, hill and moors and each night we returned to relax in 5* comfort.read our guest book
Tips from a local
Get lost in a book…
Barter Books is the oldest second-hand bookshop in the whole of the UK, and it’s right here in Alnwick! The bookshop was originally the Victorian train station in Alnwick, which when rendered unused, opened up as Barter Books instead. Inside the shop it still retains lots of the original features of the station, such as the tiled walls and arched windows.
They have a cafe inside the shop called the Station Buffet, which isn’t a buffet at all. The cafe has taken residence in the original waiting rooms of the station, so it feels cosy and intimate especially with the open fires roaring away in the winter.
Grab an interesting book, a coffee and a slice of cake and enjoy some relaxing ‘you’ time. Just try not to fall asleep.

Visit the local markets
Alnwick play’s host to the annual Alnwick Food Festival each year which is held in the market place in the middle weekend in September. As well it being a culinary delight of local produce, they have guest chefs and some fabulous street food, so it’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Every Saturday throughout the year (plus every Thursday between April ad October) they have a weekly market held in the market place. On the last Friday of every month they hold a farmers and craft market full of local people and local produce.

Visit Kielder Observatory
As well as being very romantic, this is also a unique experience in one of the International Dark Skies parks. Visiting here is best on a clear, winter night without a full moon so you can see the blanket of twinkling stars and the green glimmers of the Northern Lights. They provide hot chocolate too around the fire – get your woolly gloves and blankets at the ready!
