Tips from a local
Take a picnic to Druridge Bay Country Park and spend the day strolling along the beach and enjoying the lovely countryside. The park is centered on a lake with surrounding meadows with woods that has been restored from an old opencast coal mine, maturing beautifully into a pleasant landscape for walks and picnics. They also have water sports, a cycle path and if you have any of your own equipment you can use it on the lake. There are toilets and a café too, as well as a little gift shop which is open most weekends and gift shops. Druridge Bay is 15 minutes’ drive in the car. The best bit – dogs are welcome all year round too!

Treat yourselves to afternoon tea at Eshott Hall. It’s a beautiful country home with manicured gardens, and afternoon tea is either held in the library or the drawing room, with real fires in the winter.

If the weather is a bit rubbish, head up to Barter Books in Alnwick, which is an old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore, about 10 minutes’ drive from the cabin. Every book you can possibly imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a really lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink. You can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs and snoozing welcome!

We asked Kat what she loves most about Kate’s Cabin:
“Kate’s Cabin is a cosy, traditional style lodge, full of character and with a real woodland feel. The owner has fantastic attention to detail and the décor is simply lovely with a warm plum purple theme running through all rooms.
I love the patchwork throws in the bedrooms, giving the cabin a subtle touch of romance without making the lodge too niche for couples and too romantic!
The location of Kate’s Cabin is great, with views looking out to the small lake in the park and easy access to the A1 – perfect for exploring Northumberland Coast and Country.”
