Kipper Cottage at Embleton

A Quaint Cottage in the Coastal Village of Embleton

Kipper Cottage is a delightful, lovingly restored, 1850s double fronted stone cottage. It is a fabulous holiday retreat located in the pretty coastal village of Embleton within easy walking distance of magnificent Embleton bay with its beautiful sandy beach and magical Dunstanburgh Castle looming in the distance.  The village boasts excellent amenities including a local pub, Italian restaurant, hotel, village shop with post office, fantastic children’s play area, all within a few minutes’ stroll from the cottage.  Embleton is just one of a necklace of coastal villages on the stunning Heritage coastline of Northumberland, with Craster  – famous for its Craster Kippers – and Bamburgh and Seahouses only 15 minutes away by car.

Kipper Cottage is perfect at any time of the year. With its wood-burning stove set in an original inglenook fireplace for those chilly winter evenings and a lovely south west facing terrace and patio – sun traps during those hot, lazy days of summer. From the terrace, with its views out towards the hills, cattle and sheep can often be seen grazing in the fields beyond and the clematis covering the dry stone wall provides a haven for birds and butterflies – the perfect spot to breakfast or sit out with a glass of wine in the evenings to watch the sun set.

Wow! What a fabulous find. A fantastic property, well designed and superb attention to detail with regards to provisions.  Beautiful rooms with lots of light.  Tucked away in the picturesque village of Embleton, which has several options for eating out if you don’t want to self-cater.  Friendly and welcoming locals. A great base for exploring Northumberland.  The customer service is without fault.  I cannot recommend this property enough.  We will definitely return!

Tips from a local

Dine at The Grey’s Inn in Embleton, just a short walk from the cottage. The Grey’s is a lovely, cosy, traditional Northumbrian Pub with an hearty menu and very friendly staff. The bar is dog-friendly so you can pop in to warm up by the fire mid-walk with the pooches, and through the summer months the beer terrace out back is a little suntrap.

Tips from a local

Drive up the A1 to the causeway and visit Lindisfarne Castle and Priory on Holy Island.
The Lindisfarne Brewery and gift shop is lovely and will have some tasty goodies to bring home with you for friends and family – and for yourself!
We just ask you to be extra careful with checking your tide times for the causeway, and don’t underestimate how fast that tide comes in!

Michele and Michael Brawley

Owners of Kipper Cottage

We asked Michele and Michael, the owners, about their journey turning Kipper Cottage into a beautiful holiday home:

“It was always going to be Kipper Cottage. From the moment we drove onto Sunnybrae and saw it; neglected, overgrown, pre-loved no doubt, but like an elderly relative, visited less and less.
Sitting in the Greys Inn, wondering if we were crazy, it called to us, we could see beyond its very sad state, our heads were filled with ‘grand designs’. Then we stood at the top of Sea Lane, looked down at the slate sea surrounded by emerald meadows and Dunstanburgh Castle rising out of the mist and we were smitten!
A lopsided extension that “could be fixed up” became a pile of rubble that regenerated as a beautiful garden room. What was once just glass are now french doors, a sun terrace and countryside views. Three bedrooms and a tiny shower became two bedrooms and two lovely bathrooms.
Out of the grime of an ageing kitchen sprang a gleaming, beautiful, light space, the heart of the home. A loose piece of plaster above the fireplace fell away to reveal a hidden inglenook with a beautiful stone surround.
From grubby, flaking door frames emerged lovely, half leaded doors that had always been there, just waiting to be noticed. Uneven walls and twisted door frames became white and cream things of beauty.
A craftsman from Newcastle turned an internal sash window into a gorgeous piece of stained glass art and created a glass name plaque that bears a sandblasted picture of the house.
We saw it, we rebuilt it and it’s called Kipper Cottage.”
