Tips from a local
Visit The Alnwick Gardens and explore the spectacular Treehouse restaurant and fascinating poison garden. The gardens are open all year round, and Alnwick Castle is also a fantastic day out for the family (of course made more famous for its use in Harry Potter!) and is open March to October.
Tips from a local
Head up to Barter Books in Alnwick, which is an old Victorian train station converted into the most fabulous bookstore, about 10 minutes’ walk from the cottage. Every book you can imagine is here, even some very valuable first additions on display. They have a lovely café converted from the old waiting rooms in the station if you wanted a nibble and something hot to drink.
As the name suggests, you can bring old books into Barter Books and exchange them for credits so you can buy something new (or old!) to take home. Pick a good book and get settled in front of one of their many open fires. Dogs and snoozing welcome!
Amanda & Stan
Owners of No. 9 Percy Street
We asked Amanda and Stan, the owners of No. 9 Percy Street, what attracted them to the cottage:
“Number 9 Percy Street attracted us as a potential holiday house as it is so centrally located to the attractions of Alnwick, namely the Castle and the Garden which along with the shops can be easily reached on foot. The town is only four miles from the sea and about three miles from an East Coast mainline line station with a direct link to Newcastle and Edinburgh.
With the coast to the east and the Cheviot Hills rising to the west of the town it provides wonderful countryside for both walkers and birdwatchers. History buffs can visit the many castles that are to be found in the area.”
