Tips from a local
Drive over to Bamburgh village and walk from Bamburgh beach around to Budle Bay. The bay is full of wildlife at all times of the year and is a stunning expanse of golden sandy beach when the tide is out. On your way back to Bamburgh, admire the magnificent castle on the headland.
You can even take a picnic on a fine day and camp out for the day on the beach. Carters the butchers on the main street of the village is gorgeous for homemade pies and sausage rolls to take out, and The Pantry further down sells homemade sandwiches. Yum Yum!

Why not treat yourselves and book a Spa Day at Beau Monde in Lucker? It’s only 3 miles down the road and is one of the best luxurious exclusive spa’s in the county.
They do afternoon tea too and The Pub and restaurant next door, The Apple Core, is delicious for something a bit more hearty. Great to do when the weather is poor and you fancy a ‘pick-me-up’!
Tips from a local
Why not take a trip to visit Ford and Etal estates just half an hour’s drive north-west from Shepherd’s Cottage. The 2 villages of both Ford and Etal were built within the estate owned by the Joicey family to house the workers within the estate. Both villages are super cute with little cafe’s and places to explore.
There’s a little open train which runs between each village that you can ride to go between the two villages rather than drive. It’s as much fun for adults as it is for children, riding through the open countryside.
When you get to Ford you’ll find Heatherslaw Mill which is fantastic to visit, especially if you have children. They offer a tour around the whole mill so you can see the flour being made and then buy some fresh bread or even cereals afterwards all handmade on site.
