Tapestry Cottage was very warm and welcoming and finished to a very high standard. It felt more like a home than a holiday cottage, we did not want to leave! Excellent location for walking, cycling and exploring Northumberland. Our friends from Newcastle came to stay for the weekend and had similar thoughts and are planning to book Tapestry Cottage with their families.read our guest book
Tips from a local
A visit to National Trust’s Cragside House, Garden and Estate just outside of Rothbury Village is an absolute must when in this part of the world! The world’s first country home to be lit with hydro-electricity, and once referred to as ‘the home of the modern magician’ Cragside is full of history, incredible inventions and is beautifully preserved and set up to look like Lord Armstrong just popped out for a walk. The grounds are just as impressive with over 1000 acres and 40 miles of footpaths to explore. Whether you head to the flower beds in the formal garden, or deep into the rural woodlands of the estate, you won’t be disappointed!
Tips from a local
Visit the village’s castle ruins! There are two castles in Harbottle; one a medieval ruin where in 1515 Margaret Tudor the sister of Henry VIII stayed. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. Stone from the derelict medieval castle was used in the building of a new Harbottle Castle, a 17th century manor house situated at the east end of the village. In 1829 it was replaced on the site with a mansion designed by John Dobson which is now private residences and protected with Grade II listed building status.
Tips from a local
Dinner with a view – if you want very good traditional pub grub with the most stunning views of the Simonside Hills, then The Three Wheat Heads in Thropton is highly recommended. It has a good reputation in the area for food, and the views through the huge dining room windows are beautiful. With an inglenook fireplace with real fire, comfy seating and Northumbrian Ale, this pub is perfect for resting tired legs after a day exploring the county.
Theresa and Dave
Owners of Tapestry Cottage
We asked Theresa and Dave what made them fall in love with Tapestry Cottage:
“We had never heard of Harbottle Village until we saw Tapestry Cottage for sale in a local newspaper many years ago. It was a beautiful autumn day when we decided to drive up and have a look at it and from the moment we drove into Harbottle and saw the cottage we fell in love with it. It was empty and almost derelict, we climbed in through a broken window to look around and saw the potential. It even had an old Gypsy caravan in the garden complete with its original fittings. The surrounding countryside was gorgeous with undulating hills and forests in the background with the River Coquet running alongside the village. The next day we put in an offer and it was accepted.
We employed an architect to re configure the rooms, it had to be demolished and re built using the original stone and it was finally finished September 2012. It was always our intention that it would be a holiday home, somewhere we could escape to from our busy city lives.
For us it is always a treat to stay at Tapestry Cottage and our friends and family love it too, it’s a very happy place full of fond memories.”
