The Old Farmhouse near Alnwick is a quintessentially English ‘chocolate box’ Grade II Listed stone cottage, set in an idyllic location in the heart of the beautiful Northumbrian countryside near the country village of Felton and the Ducal town of Alnwick. Looking out towards the River Coquet, with views of the rugged Northumbrian coast and the sea in the distance, this cottage is ideal for both country and beach lovers, with both attractions easily accessible.

Sleeping up to 4 adults and 2 children, it’s located just minutes from the pretty Northumbrian village of Felton, with the River Coquet flowing through the village, a well renowned Artisan Bakery and cafe ‘The Running Fox’, great ‘foodie’ pub ‘The Northumberland Arms’ and a popular art gallery to explore.

Within around 10-15 minutes drive are the cultural and historically important towns of market towns of Alnwick and Morpeth, and the beautiful Bamburgh and Holy Island just an easy drive away, The Old Farmhouse provides the perfect base from which to explore the magic and mysteries of historic Northumberland.

Situated on the fringe of a small residential steading, The Old Farmhouse retains the charm of its 300 year old history, hinting at its farming heritage, whilst being very ’21st century’ inside.  Stylishly furnished with a luxury kitchen and bathrooms and beautiful interior design, it’s also incredibly comfortable, with sumptuous sofas, a fabulous wood-burning stove and luxury beds throughout. As Brits currently living in Belgium, the owners have injected a little flavour of Brussels to The Old Farmhouse, giving a sense of continental luxury and richness to the decor – quite reminiscent of the Georgian period the house dates back to.

Sleeping a maximum of 4 adults and 2 children in 3 bedrooms, the large open plan kitchen/dining room/sitting room with its huge table is the heart of the house. There is also a cosy lounge with wood-burning stove and large flat screen TV. The enclosed lawned garden and furnished patio are ideal for families.

Free Wi-fi broadband access throughout the cottage and telephone for incoming calls only (outgoing emergency calls only). One well behaved dog (or two small dogs) are very welcome for a small charge of £20 per dog per holiday.


Ground floor

Entrance and Hallway

A solid oak front door leads into a useful porch, ideal for depositing shoes, boots and coats. An inner glazed doorway then leads into a spacious hall, with an impressive solid oak staircase, cloakroom/WC and doors leading to the lounge in one direction and a spacious open plan living area in the other. Wooden floors with sumptuous rugs throughout the ground floor give a country feel to the cottage.


Open Plan Luxury Kitchen/Dining Room/Sitting Room

Accessed from the spacious hallway but also from the rear entrance, which is likely to be the most popular entrance as it’s nearer the parking area and driveway. The luxury Shaker-style kitchen has solid oak cabinets with plenty of storage, granite work surfaces, stainless steel appliances and a Belfast sink.

The kitchen area is a most impressive space boasting a beautiful exposed oak-beamed vaulted ceiling and windows on 2 elevations overlooking the pretty patio and an open lawned area (not for guests use but there are lawns on 2 other sides of the house to enjoy). There are two ovens, a ceramic hob, built-in microwave, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer. A chrome kettle, Dualit toaster and Nespresso coffee machine are stylish additions to the kitchen, and there are several inspirational recipe books to inspire some some creative home-dining. A separate walk-in pantry houses the boiler and housekeeping equipment.

There is also a hi-fi radio with docking station for iPod’s/MP3 players and iPhones.


Dining Area and Sitting Room

As a second sitting room, in addition to the drawing room, this area is open plan to the kitchen, so provides the perfect entertaining space for chatting over a glass of wine whilst dinner is prepared. With the benefit of a large flat screen TV, is also provides a useful second living area for those who want to watch a different TV channel or read in peace.


Drawing Room

A truly grown up space with comfortable top of the range leather sofas, accessorized with Belgian tapestry soft furnishings to snuggle into whilst enjoying the wood burning stove crackling away in the inglenook fireplace. Whether you are relaxing over your favourite TV soap, enjoying a good book curled up on the sofa or enjoying a lively debate over a game of Scrabble, this is the perfect room to retire to after your evening meal. With a Smart TV in the lounge and an additional TV in the kitchen, there’s no need to argue over which TV show to watch!


First Floor

The staircase is magnificent, styled in solid oak in a chunky yet stylish country style, with a huge landing window with a windowsill large enough to take a cushion and sit and read a book or plug in headphones and listen to some music.


Master Bedroom

A huge room with dual aspect windows, beautifully furnished in a French style with a luxury 6ft wide superking size Frank Hudson bed and matching furniture providing plenty of storage. This room exudes elegance, with its soft tones and sheer comfort. Through the window to the front of the house there is a lovely view over the fields to the coast.

There is also a large flat-screen TV and there is an en-suite shower room to this bedroom.

Bedroom 2

A glamorous and cosy room with opulent French style furniture. A fabulous king size (5ft wide) bed with a pocket sprung mattress and luxury bed linen complete the sense of pure luxury. The traditional Toile de Jouy wallpaper and soft furnishings hint at a French Provencal style, with matt silver Tiffany furniture and the ornate king size bed. A lovely window seat with coordinating Toile de Jouy upholstery provides the perfect spot for day dreamers or writers of poetry perhaps, as the view to the coast is quite inspirational! There is also a flat screen TV.


Bedroom 3 – Bunk Bed Room

Whilst the bunk beds strongly suggest a young person’s bedroom, this room, in classic blue Sanderson flowers and stripes, may also appeal to those who have a child’s heart and strong sense of nostalgia! The bunks are full size and sturdy and whilst designed for children’s use, each bunk can accommodate a small adult of maximum 12 stone in weight. This room is not advertised for adults but it is possible for adults to sleep in here as long as they are within the weight restriction. This is a charming room with a child-like magic and a lot of comfort. It just feels so cosy in here! Please note that children under the age of 6 should not sleep in the top bunk.


Family Bathroom

A spacious bathroom, beautifully tiled and containing a bath with mains shower over, WC and wash hand basin.



A pretty, lawned cottage garden bordered with colourful shrubs is situated to the front of the cottage, whilst there is a stone flagged patio, complete with table and chairs for dining or just relaxing with a glass of wine or cup of coffee.

This attractive garden is bordered by shrubs and a 4ft wall. Please see important note below regarding the enclosure of the garden and patio.

There is a large enclosed paddock to the rear of the steading, which the farmer has kindly granted permission for our guests to use as an open space – particularly for dogs to be able to have a run around. However, he does occasionally store farming equipment in part of the paddock, so you must take care to keep your dog and children away from this whilst in the field, in the interests of health and safety.


Please be Aware

Whilst the bedroom with the bunk beds lends itself perfectly to accommodating 2 children, the bunk beds are full size and can accommodate a maximum weight of 12 stones, so may be utilized by adults if required – with care. The top bunk must not be occupied by a child under 6 years old however.

Due to the design of the staircase, it is not possible to fit a stair gate to the bottom of the stairs, however a portable, pressure-fit gate is available upon request which may be fitted to the kitchen/dining room doorway, to prevent toddlers and dogs gaining access to the stairs. At the top of the stairs, there is a concertina-style gate fitted.

Please note that whilst both the front garden and the rear patio garden areas are enclosed with walls and shrubs to a height of approximately 4ft, we can make no guarantee that they are ‘secure’ – especially for dogs which may try to jump over the wall. So if you have a dog which is likely to try to jump over the wall, then you are advised to keep it on a lead.

Please be Aware
Although we advertise the bunk bed room as being for children, each bunk can sleep an adult of maximum 12 stones in weight. This room is tastefully decorated yet small, so may not appeal to a couple whose friends would be sharing the large master room, but it is possible for adults to sleep here as long as they are within the weight restriction.

Map & Local Area

The Old Farmhouse is situated in the old Northumbrian hamlet of East Thirston. There are some stunning countryside views to be seen from the cottage and the pretty village of Felton is the nearest village, just over a mile away.

In Felton you can find the artisan bakery and coffee shop, The Running Fox, as well as foodie pub The Northumberland Arms. There;s a great local art gallery and village shop here too.

The nearest market town is Alnwick, 15 minutes’ drive north. As Felton is just off the A1 it’s very easy to get onto the main road to go north or south from The Old Farmhouse. Here you have the famous Alnwick Castle, Gardens and Treehouse, as well as the pretty market town with its weekly farmers markets.

The nearest beach is Druridge Bay and Country Park, where annual events are held such as boating on the lake and the VW Campervan festival or the little beach at Low Hauxley. The beach is dog friendly all year round and absolutely perfect to take a picnic to the country park.

You can also reach the National Park very easily from East Thirston, where you can find the pretty country village of Rothbury, Lord Armstrong’s Cragside House and Estate and further afield is Kielder Forest.

We have been born, bred and married in Northumberland and decided to spend our 51st wedding anniversary in the county. What a wonderful place to enjoy it!  This cottage is so beautiful, one of the best we have ever stayed in and we have rented cottages all over the country.  Everything was absolutely perfect from directions on how to get there to the attention to detail to make any guest feel as comfortable as if it were their own home. We will certainly be back again, in-fact we will just stay here forever, we should have never left!

Felton is such a lovely, traditional Northumbrian village and the local pub, The Northumberland Arms, is a real asset.  It’s been transformed into a great Gastro Pub in recent years, it’s very welcoming and dogs are welcome in the bar too.

Fresh bread from The Running Fox

Across the bridge from the pub, The Running Fox Artisan Bakery offers wonderful bread, pasties and cakes, as well as newspapers and magazines. They have a renowned cafe serving great lunches and afternoon teas, and even a small bar below.

The outside seating area is really sweet too and a suntrap in the summer. Although the cafe isn’t dog friendly, dogs are still welcome outside.

The other pub in the village was transformed in recent years into what is now a thriving art gallery:  Gallery 45 – well worth a visit if you’re interested in local art and crafts or just need a Birthday Card.  They also host crafting workshops – great to learn something new on holiday!

The village is warm and welcoming.   At Christmas we sing Carols on the bridge (come rain or shine!), in the summer we throw ourselves into the village fete, where my daughter has won a craft prize or two and my dogs have won a few awards in the dog shows!

We asked Ingrid and Ronnie, the owners, what made them fall in love with The Old Farmhouse:

“We bought The Old Farmhouse as a family home from home. Our daughter was born in Tokyo and as almost permanent expats these days currently living in Brussels, we were keen to find a place that we could all call home in the UK.

We had spent several summers and Christmas breaks renting through Coquet Cottages in and around Warkworth and were actively looking for that somewhere special.   Several fruitless visits meant that we were losing hope until one summer, up popped The Old Farmhouse in my email inbox just as we had started a holiday in Portugal! Concerned not to lose out, we asked my sister-in-law to go and visit and 40 photos and several phone calls later, we bought our lovely cottage without having set foot in it ourselves!!  We did finally viewed it the day before signing any papers and it exceeded our expectations! The house is lovely and with some TLC we brought it up to the Coquet Cottage standard. We hope you’ll love it just as much.

We got truly lucky with the local village of Felton – what a bonus this lovely place turned out to be.  All in all the area is fantastic and we hope you will enjoy everything it has to offer when you visit.”
