Tips from a local

Go for a hike at Kielder and take in the breath-taking scenery. With woodland walks, impressive lakes, fishing trips and even Dark Skies star gazing at the Observatory, this award-winning national park is definitely worth a visit day or night.

For an astronomy tour, be sure to book via the Observatory website to ensure a space and avoid disappointment.

Tips from a local

Dine at the William de Percy Inn and Creperie in Otterburn.  Just a few yards walk from the cottage, the William de Percy is a French inspired gastro pub and creperie. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere warm and welcoming, and the pub is dog-friendly so your pooches can enjoy it all too!

It’s part of the highly renowed and award-winning Le Petit Chateau wedding venue.

Tips from a local

Visit Wallington Hall and Gardens near Cambo, just around 15 minutes’ drive from the cottage.

This National Trust Property has over 13,000 acres of land to explore. The woodland walk from the hall takes you to a stunning pond and walled garden, with an impressive conservatory greenhouse, and gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Keep an eye out for red squirrels in the woods, and be sure to head back to the Clock Tower Cafe for a homemade soup or locally produced Doddington Dairy ice cream.

The Hall itself is very impressive and has what must be the world’s largest collection of antique doll’s houses!

Carole Hedley

Owner of Weaver's Cottage

We asked Carole, the owner, about the history of Weaver’s Cottage:

“Weavers cottage is one of 8 cottages built in the early 1900’s for the workers in Otterburn Woollen Mill.  The houses overlook the River Rede and the sheep, which were the two reasons for the mill being situated in Otterburn.

I imagine the workers crossing the field to get to work.  I am not sure what their work was like but the workers were well looked after and given life tenancies in the houses which were only sold off as the old workers passed away.  The previous owner of Weaver’s Cottage lived until she was 96 having lived there since she was a young bride of 20.

Although the Mill is still open, the tweeds are brought in and the main business in the village has changed from weaving to weddings!  There are three large wedding venues in one small village which create lots of jobs in the area.  I hope when you come to stay you also enjoy the sense of history and tradition.”
