Tips from a local
Cragside is a must when staying in this area of Northumberland. Cragside was the first country house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power by Lord Armstrong, a key figure in Northumberland. As well as the interesting house, the whole estate is open to the public with its magnificent walks and country trails, as well as a huge children’s play park and a nice café too. The rock garden and pinetum walk (through the Douglas Firs – like the one is the garden of Woodlands Retreat, some of which were planted in the late 1800s) is breath-taking!
It is ran by the National Trust, click HERE to visit the website.

Be a little bit creative
Is it a rainy day or do you just fancy being a bit creative? This is great if you have kids (or still great if you don’t!) – visit Pots and Paws in Rothbury and practice your pottery painting! They offer lots of different types of ceramics and they can wood-fire them for you to collect the next day and take home.
The gift shop is pretty eccentric too!
Tips from a local
Visit Fanciulli’s in Rothbury for a delicious Italian meal. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant is sat on the main road through village, in a great location for heading to the nearby pubs and beer gardens afterwards, or having a stroll along the river to walk the Carbonara off! Fanciulli’s are a cafe bistro and do have some lighter options if you’re there for a quick lunch, and are flexible with meeting customer requirements, so are a great little find for pleasing the whole family.
