Map & Local Area
Cuthbert’s Cottage is superbly situated within walking distance of St. Aiden’s beach and the popular seaside village of Seahouses, with its many shops, restaurants, picturesque harbour and the famous ‘Ship Inn’.
North Sunderland expanded into Seahouses when the fishermen built summer sea houses so they could live closer the harbour the during the Herring season. The harbour to this day is still called North Sunderland Harbour and remains very busy but not with working trawlers; it’s now busy with visitors catching boats to the nearby Farne Islands to see the fantastic nature including the seal & bird colonies. Today North Sunderland still remains close enough to the hustle bustle of Seahouses whilst being a perfect location to access all the coastal gems & the beautiful Northumberland countryside. It has also just acquired its very own local pub; the Longstone Hotel, serving good food, which is just a couple of minutes easy walk from Cuthbert’s Cottage.
It’s also a great central location from which to explore all of Northumberland, including Bamburgh (just 5 minutes drive), Alnwick, Holy Island and The Borders. There are excellent swimming pools at Berwick (with flume and wave machine) and Alnwick, around 25 minutes’ drive.

Tips from a local
Watch the sunset whilst enjoying a divine meal at St. Aidan’s bistro. This hidden gem is right on the sea front in Seahouses and has huge windows overlooking the North Sea, and the sunsets in the summer are absolutely breathtaking.
You must book in advance at St. Aidan’s, as it’s only open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday evenings and is very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Walk or drive to Bamburgh village and walk from Bamburgh beach around to Budle Bay. The bay is full of wildlife at all times of the year and is a stunning huge expanse of golden sandy beach when the tide is out. On your way back to Bamburgh, admire the magnificent castle on the headland – used as the backdrop for many famous movies including The BFG and Beowulf.
Tips from a local
Take a boat tour out to the Farne Islands with Billy Shiel’s Boat Trips. This is a must when you come to Northumberland, especially as you are so close to Seahouses. The tours leave from Seahouses harbour and sail all around the Farne Islands. Some stop at the islands where you can get off the boat and have a tour by one of the local rangers, and each boat tour differs depending on the season and what is nesting/breeding around the island. Billy Shiel’s tours are the largest operator in the town, still ran by all the members of the Shiel family who are the most knowledgeable about the area. Make sure you book in advance as they are incredibly popular, especially after being featured on the hugely popular “Tales from Northumberland’ with Robson Green!

A Little Note from the Owners…
“We both grew up enjoying endless happy holidays in our lovely Northumberland…
Not a lot has changed. It was only after we spent a year travelling that we both fully appreciated how beautiful it was right here on our doorstep – after all where else do you find huge golden beaches with so many castles!
Our dream of one day living permanently here became a reality when we set eyes on ‘Cuthbert’s Cottage. It may be newly built but this honey-coloured stone cottage has such a sense of home & tranquility. There’s room for all generations to relax and enjoy this lovely cottage. We’ve chosen the decor to create a comfortable retreat to help you unwind after a busy day, by using restful tones & heritage colours throughout.
Perfectly placed, an easy stroll will take you into Seahouses which has several restaurants & the famous Ship Inn and you can watch the boats returning from the Farne islands.
One of my favourite walks whatever the season is on the beach from Seahouses to Bamburgh – the sight of the magnificent castle on the beach never ceases to amaze me! So until retirement beckons we’d love you to visit & share our dream home.”
