Map & Local Area

Longstone Cottage near Seahouses is superbly situated within walking distance of St. Aiden’s beach and the popular seaside village of Seahouses, with its many shops, restaurants, picturesque harbour and the famous ‘Olde Ship Inn’. It is also a great central location from which to explore all of Northumberland, including Bamburgh (just 10 minutes drive), Alnwick, Holy Island and The Borders. There are excellent swimming pools at Berwick (with flume and wave machine) and Alnwick, around 25 minutes’ drive.

The pretty close of Village Farm is a newly built, peaceful development which is a sun trap being not on the sea front. The newly refurbished restaurant at Longstone House is open Thursday to Sunday and has a good reputation for food. It’s less than 5 minutes away from the cottage and has a bar and beer garden too.

Tips from a local

Take a boat tour out to the Farne Islands with Billy Shiel’s boat trips. This is a must when you come to Northumberland, especially staying so close to Seahouses.  The tours leave from Seahouses harbour and sail all around the Farne Islands.  Some stop at the islands where you can get off the boat and have a tour by one of the local rangers, and each boat tour differs depending on the season and what is nesting/breeding around the island.  Billy Shiel’s tours are the oldest and largest operator in the town, still ran by all the members of the Shiel family who are the most knowledgeable about the area.  Make sure you book in advance as they are incredibly popular, especially after being featured on the highly regarded TV series with Robson Green ‘Tales from Northumberland’.

Tips from a local

Your nearest bar and restaurant is at The Longstone House Hotel, just minutes from Village Farm (just turn right out of the close). This gorgeous bar and restaurant is newly opened and the restaurant serves all fresh local produce including the catch from Seahouses harbour. The restaurant is small so booking in advance is definitely recommended. They are open on Thursday evenings, all day on Friday and Saturday and then for Sunday lunch.

The bar serves a wide range of beers and spirits and is open from 5pm till late on Monday – Thursday, then from Midday to late from Friday – Sunday and you can enjoy a drink in the sunny beer garden.

Tips from a local

Walk or drive to Bamburgh village and walk from Bamburgh beach up to beautiful Budle Bay. The bay is full of wildlife at all times of the year and is a stunning expanse of golden sandy beach when the tide is out. On your way back to Bamburgh, admire the magnificent castle on the headland.

Tips from a local

Watch the sun setting around Bamburgh Castle whilst enjoying a divine meal at St. Aidan’s bistro. This lovely bistro is right on the sea front in Seahouses and has huge windows overlooking the sea and Bamburgh Castle – the sunsets in the summer are absolutely breathtaking.
You must book in advance at St. Aidan’s, as it’s only open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday evenings and is very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Ann

Owner of Longstone

We asked Ann what made her fall in love with Longstone:

“Like so many people l have such happy childhood memories of Seahouses, playing on the beaches. It was the first place I showed my Norwegian husband when I first met him. Then over thirty years later we drove up to Seahouses and by chance, we discovered Village Farm and immediately fell in love with the beautiful farm conversion, in the process of being completed.

Longstone was the first property that we viewed and within seconds of walking in, we knew it was the right place for us. We’ve enjoyed many holidays and weekends exploring the beautiful surrounding area from this lovely cottage, and we hope our guests will enjoy it as much as we have.”
