Map & Local Area
The walk to Sunny Cottage from the riverbank is very romantic; through 2 pretty archways then leading through the little gardens to the front door. Whilst the riverbank is only 100 yards from the front door, it still feels private and secluded. The main street of the village is just 5 minutes away on foot, and the beach just 15 minutes away.
Warkworth is a gorgeous village to explore – tons of history and interesting things to see, as well has having restaurants, a French patisserie, pubs and interesting little independent shops and art galleries. Nearly all the eating places are dog friendly too. Everything is so accessible from Warkworth village, but there is enough to do in walking distance without even getting in the car!
Alnwick Castle with its world-famous Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Treehouse is just 15 minutes’ drive away, as well as the market town of Alnwick with its farmer markets in the town square. Bamburgh and Holy Island are further north and can all be reached by following the coastal route along our stunning coastline. Inland you will find the country town of Rothbury and further afield the amazing Kielder forest and reservoir, famous for its Dark Skies.

I came with my sister and husband who have been before and raved about the cottage and Warkworth – they weren’t exaggerating. Loved the cottage, it has a lovely tranquil feeling. The ‘Welcome Pack’ was more like a hamper! Thank you so much for making it so comfortable and welcoming. The cottage was so clean and the beds were so comfortable! Blissful.

Tips from a local
Find some interesting sea-critters in the rock pools at the northern end of Warkworth beach at Birling Rocks. Head to the beach and take a left, heading north up the coast. Walk as far as you can and you will reach the rock pools at Birling Rocks. Seals have been spotted on these rocks many times, so you may be lucky! At the south end of the beach there is a pier leads right out with gorgeous views of Coquet Island and the Amble harbour.
Tips from a local
Put away the frying pan and nip along to Bertram’s for a hearty breakfast in front of the roaring fire! From the traditional full English and local favourite Craster Kippers, to something a little lighter such as homemade porridge with fresh cream and berries or fresh fruit with granola and yoghurt, coupled with a hot mug of fresh coffee, you can reward yourself after a long walk on the beach and set yourself up for the rest of the day. The best bit? It’s dog friendly!
Tips from a local
Fancy a good walk? Why not walk to Alnmouth along the cycle route, paired with beautiful views of the coast and the Balamory-style houses in Alnmouth. The walk is about 4 miles long each way and is a fairly flat and an easy walk along a proper path. When you arrive at Alnmouth there are 4 pubs and a handful of cafes to fuel up, but if you are simply defeated you can catch the bus straight back to Warkworth which takes about 10 minutes. They are fairly regular and dogs are welcome on the bus too.
Julie and Mark
We asked the owners of Sunny Cottage, Julie and Mark, what they love most about the cottage:
“It took a long time to restore this cottage in the depths of winter to what it is today, which is a luxury, cosy, comfortable and home-from-home holiday cottage – exactly what we were aiming for and more.
Before moving to the area we used the cottage as our little Northumbrian getaway, to escape from hectic life and unwind in pure comfort.
We always holidayed in the winter for weekends when we could get up here. Our best memories are wrapping up with all the thermals we had, going for a brisk walk on the beach with the wind biting at our cheeks, then to collapse in front of the fire with a hot cup of coffee and something sweet.
Sunny Cottage holds so many happy memories for us as a family, and it’s a joy to see others enjoying it too.”
